PECULIARITIES OF THE SYNTACTIC ORGANIZATION OF THE GENRE OF SCIENTIFIC REVIEW

Julia Antonenko

Department of Russian Philology, Ivan Franko Lviv National University, Lviv, Lviv region, Ukraine Available 5 September 2012.

Abstract Relevance

The relevance of the paper is the syntactic organization of different genres of scientific speech, the dynamics of their change over time are not the subject of close attention of researchers despite the fact that the large number of studies of syntax and syntactic units, typical for scientific communication in linguistic science.

Purpose

The purpose of the article is to consider the features of syntactic organization of scientific review genre, to establish the relationship between the choice of syntactic means and extralinguistic factors, as well as to track the dynamics of changes in the syntactic text organization of scientific reviews in diachrony.

Tasks

It is quite obvious there is a determination of the main tasks, namely: 1) to determine set of syntactic means specific for scientific language; 2) to identify syntactic means which are peculiar to the genre of science review; 3) to establish a relation between the syntactic organization of a speech genre, and also intra- and extralinguistic factors; 4) to characterize the dynamics of the changes taking place in the syntactic organization of the speech genre of science reviews for XXth - be ginning of XXIth century.

Sources of factual material

The material of the study was involved in separate texts of the reviews, published in the weighty scientific community publications: "Problems of Linguistics" and "Problems of Literature" in the period from 1980 to 2010. Conclusion

The material under study allows to speak about internal differentiation of the genre of science reviews. Review aiming to assess of knowledge in the field of linguistics, show greater conformity to the canons of scientific speech. Genre of scientific review, which is realized in the texts of "Problems of Linguistics", is less affected by extralinguistic

factors on the choice of syntactic means. Authors of reviews are careful about choose of conventionally not-fixed means of language, however, the reviews of 1980s are qualitatively different from the reviews of 2000s by the general for science departure from rigorizative models of the text. Reviews published in "Problems of Literature" show a direct dependence on extralinguistic factors such as political, economic and social changes in the society. The result of this dependence is a significant syntactic, lexical and stylistic change of the genre of literary criticism scientific review - it has incorporated features of advertising, newspaper discourses.

Thus, there have been significant changes in both public and private nature in the genre of science reviews for the last thirty years. On the one hand, there is a departure from traditional models of building a scientific text, on the other, there is new respect for the conventions of scientific discourse community. The authors of scientific reviews are actively seeking means of literary language, and there is a trend towards the usage of expressive characteristic of journalistic and literary texts.

Perspective

From the standpoint the theory of genres research of syntactic organization of scientific review is perspective for fully exploring its genre specific, because it helps to reveal the specifics of the communicative orientation of the genre, to increase knowledge about the genre variability of scientific discourse.

Research highlights

► The article reveals the peculiarity of the syntactic organization of texts of the scientific review from the position of genre studies. The dynamic of variations of the syntactic organization of genre of the scientific review which depend on communicative strategy of the author, extralinguistic factors and conventions of the scientific discourse community is considered.

Keywords: genre of scientific review, syntactic organization, communicative strategy, extralinguistic factors, discourse community.

INTONATION AS MEANS OF EXPRESSION OF SYNTACTICAL CONNECTION IN THE WORD-COMBINATION

Marina Balko

Department of Ukrainian Studies, Didorenko Donetsk Juridical Institute of Luhansk State University of Internal Affairs, Donetsk, Donetsk region, Ukraine

Available 4 September 2012.

Abstract Relevance

The study of word-combination as a syntactical unit has long history, however even now a word-combination is one of the most complex syntactical constructions. The linguists argue on many issues of word-combination theory, starting from which collocations of words shall be considered as word-combinations, and ending with doubts regarding the appropriateness to consider word-combinations as syntactical units at all (cf., for example, the approach of Yu.V. Fomenko or studies of representatives of the psychological field in linguistics). Nevertheless most linguists still recognise such syntactical unit as word-combination (cf. the studies of O.S. Akhmanova, V.V. Vinogradov,

I.R. Vykhovanets, A.P. Zagnitko, N.L. Ivanytska, O.S. Melnychuk, M.M. Prokopovych, O.S. Skoblykova, T.O. Tulina, H.M. Udovychenko, N.I. Filicheva, etc.). Moreover, now the new concepts of word-combination definition appear (cf. the approaches of I.R. Vykhovanets, L.M. Murzin, etc.), and that makes it necessary to reconsider certain aspects of theory of these syntactical constructions, in particular the means of connection between their components. Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to ground the necessity to recognise intonation as a means of expressing the syntactical connections between the components of word-combinations.

Tasks

The stated purpose presupposes solution of following tasks: 1) to analyze the main approaches to determination of means of connection between word-combination components; 2) to characterise the importance of consideration of intonation as a means of expressing the syntactical connections between the components of word-combinations based upon propositional nature of those syntactical units.

Conclusion

A word-combination is a special syntactical unit, which is studied first of all as a grammatical construction, a model built based upon grammatical laws of combining the words. At the same time it is obvious that while analyzing the mechanisms of construction of word-combinations it is necessary to take into account the intonation factors as well, since a word-combination is singled out only from a sentence, and intonation and pausation are present in any sentence.

Perspective

The perspective includes the review of many postulates of traditional theories of word-combinations (starting from means of expression of syntactical connection and ending with typological, functional and semantic appearances of word-combination), which will allow deep understanding of nature of this complex syntactical unit.

Research highlights

► The article presents the position that it is necessary to take into account not only lexical-grammatical means of expression of syntactical connection for a comprehensive analysis of the specifics of word-combinations' formation. ► It arguments the point of view that sometimes for the description of the type of the connection between the components of the word-combination intonation and pause are decisive.

Keywords: word-combination, syntactical connection, intonation, pause.

THE MODERN UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE PICTURE OF THE WORLD IN PHRASEOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS

Hanna Bardukova

Department of Ukrainian Language and Applied Linguistics, Donetsk National University, Donetsk, Ukraine

Available 22 August 2012

Abstract Relevance

А man learns the world by means of a language: the new topical concepts, meanings and meaning nuances get their expression in the social language practice normally, that is they are named. The naming is necessary and obligatory condition of their confirmation and subsequent functioning. Phrasemics as one of the most dynamic

subsystems of the language system as well as lexicology responds to the new nominative and communicative speakers' needs in their cognitive activity promptly and taking nuances into consideration. The numerous phraseological innovations - the result of cognitive process verbalization - are the object of study from different aspects in the modern linguistics. V.M. Mokiienko, A.M. Melerovych, T.N. Matveieva, L.I. Stepanova, L.P. Diadechko, T.H. Nikitina and other scholars study the processes of Russian language phrasemics renovation actively today. The Russian phraseological neography also develops successfully. The lexicographical works by A.M. Melerovych and V.M. Mokiienko "The phraseological units in the Russian speech" (M., 1997 / 2001), L.P. Diadechko "The new in the Russian and Ukrainian speech: winged utterances" (K., 2001-2003), V. M. Mokiienko "The new Russian phraseology" (Opole, 2003), the group of authors - teachers of the department of Slavoinc studies of Philosophy faculty of the University named after Palatskyi in Olomouts (Czech Republic) - headed by L.I. Stepanova (editor) "The dictionary of the new Russian vocabulary and phraseology" (Olomouts, 2001) prove the truth of it. Unfortunately the dictionary of the new Ukrainian phraseology has not been created so far. I.S. Hnatiuk, Ye.A. Karpilovska, Zh.V. Koloiz, L.M. Pashynska, T.V. Tsymbaliuk and other scholars investigate the problems of Ukrainian language phrasemics renovation in their research. Anyway this aspect of phraseological unit study hasn't been interpreted enough in Ukrainian linguistics yet, that's why it is very topical today. The mobile fields of the Modern Ukrainian language phrasemics, particularly the conceptual aspect of modern Ukrainian phraseological deviations-innovations require further investigation.

Purpose

The analysis of the phenomenon of widening of Ukrainian language cognitive area with the help of phraseological innovations is the purpose of the article.

Tasks

This purpose includes the following tasks: 1) examination of phraseological innovations which indicate new factors of reality; 2) description of the phenomenon of expressive and stylistic actualization of long known factors of reality by phraseological innovations, differentiation of their subgroups by the degree of novelty of formal phraseological innovative structure; 3) making conclusions and planning perspectives of research.

Conclusion

Phraseological innovations in the Modern Ukrainian language normally show the semantic specific character in regard to lexical innovations: they are meant not to signify in the full sense new phenomena of reality, but give the new appraisal characteristic to long known factors of reality - first of all to a man and different fields of his activity, so phraseological innovations imply by the new means not nomination, but predication and appraisal in the language activity of Modern Ukrainian community. It explains the considerable amount of stylistic and functional phraseological innovations in comparison with semantic and functional ones. The appearance of phraseological innovations - units with new expressive and stylistic parameters - is the result of 1) creating of the new formal phraseological model, 2) maintaining of the formal and structural characteristics of the known phraseological unit when it acquires traditionally not topical meaning, 3) renovation or "up-to-dating" of the phraseme form existing in Ukrainian language with addition of new meaning nuances.

Perspective

The absence of language dynamics lexicographical description in Ukrainian linguistics today determines the sharp necessity to create the dictionary of Ukrainian language innovations, where phraseological deviations-innovations will take up the worthy place. The further development of factual basis of this work, namely accumulation and detailed analysis of different aspects of new phraseological units, fixed in the language of Modern Ukrainian literature and publicistic writing - functional styles which have been taking part actively in the formation of Ukrainian literary language sample for a long time, opens perspectives for such lexicographical work creating.

Research highlights

The conceptual aspect of phraseological innovations in the Modern Ukrainian language has been investigated: the groups and subgroups of new phraseological units have been differentiated by the meaning and functions. ► Its specificity has been determined.

Keywords

Keywords: language dynamics, phrasemics, phraseological innovation, semantic and functional phraseological innovation, stylistic and functional phraseological innovation.

SEMANTIC LINKS BETWEEN COMPONENTS IN THE STRUCTURE OF SUBSTANTIVAL

BINOMIAL WITH ATTRIBUTIVE RELATIONS

Olena Buvalets

Department of Russian Language, Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University, Kharkiv, Ukraine Available 4 September 2012.

Abstract Relevance

The relevance of given subject is due to ambiguous interpretation of semantic-grammatical status of dual substantival combinations with attributive relationships between the elements: attributed component (main component of the combination) and attributing component of the combination (apposition) in modern science, due to their close connection with substantival combination with equal syntactic relationships between the elements constructed by such grammatical model "Noun-Noun", due to the absence of unified principles of distinction of different types of substantival binomial with characterological, metaphorical, comparative relationships between the elements, and also due to specific metaphorical and comparative relations in the substantival binomial.

Purpose

The purpose of the article is definition of semantic links peculiarities (metaphoric, comparative, characterological) between components of substantival binomial: attributing component (core component) and attributed component (apposition). Substantival binomials classification that takes into consideration semantic relations between the components is proposed.

Tasks

The purpose of the article causes the following tasks: 1) a classification of substantival binomials with attributive relationships taking into account semantic links between the elements (metaphoric, comparative, characterological); 2) analysis of specific features of each group of combinations; 3) identification and description of transitional cases.

Conclusion

The analysis of semantic relationships between the elements of substantival binomials with attributive relations in the poetic text allowed detecting two main groups of combinations: substantival binomials where components are converged on the ground of metaphorical comparison and substantival combinations where attributing component performs characterizing function.

The basis of the first group is composed of substantival binomials with metaphor-comparison in which allocation of comparative feature and referring combination to metaphorical or comparative relationships are difficult. The Author refers substantival combinations, in which comparison feature has a high "determinability" degree (explicitness), to combinations with prevailing comparative relations. She appeals combinations in which detection of the main comparative feature is complicated by the presence of other features to the combinations with the prevailing metaphorical relationship. On the base of these features the similarity of the compared objects is performed. The Author observes the combinations with individual author's metaphor when the level of remoteness of similarity relationships between elements of a substantival binomial is maximum.

Among the substantival binomials, in which attributing element performs characterizing function, we identify combinations with figurative characteristic (combinations with epithets) and combinations with attributing element -characteristics according to certain feature specific to the object, expressed by the attributed component of combination, that is not a figurative characteristic (combinations with epithet-characteristic).

In some cases poetic context creates conditions for neutralization of syntactic position of apposition and attributed substantive, which is due to linguistic polysemy of comparison feature, and improves semantic uncertainty and multivariance of poetic text.

Perspective

Perspective of this study is to compare substantival binomials with attributive relationships with other types of semantic relationships between components in idiostyle of XX century poetry representatives.

Research highlights

The article deals with semantic link (metaphoric, simile, characterizing) between components of substantival binomials: attributing component and attributed component. Substantival binomials' classification taking into consideration semantic relations between the components is proposed.

Keywords: substantival binomial, attributing component (noun in apposition), attributed component, metaphor, simile, epithet, epithet-characteristics.

METAPHOR AS A MEANS OF EXPRESSING THE CONCEPT LAUGH IN POETIC TEXTS OF

BEGINNING OF THE XXITH CENTURY (COGNITIVE ASPECT)

Inna Danyliuk

Department of Ukrainian language, Vasyl Stefanyk Prykarpattia National University, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine

Available 21 August 2012.

Abstract Relevance

Increasing interest in the study of cognitive modeling of the world enhances the transition of scientific paradigm to anthropological linguistics according to which language is considered in the close contact with a person, human conscience, spiritual and practical activity. For this reason study of conceptual metaphor that helps to reveal the unique features of specific subject or phenomenon is very promising. Metaphor as a universal linguistic figure has been studied

by many researchers all along (Aristotle, N. Arutyunova, A. Vezhbitska, M. Johnson, G. Lakoff, V. Teliya, J. Shylkova). As a main "mechanism" of meaning formation conceptual metaphor has been actively verbalized in the modern poetic discourse, revealing its potential in the generally-symbolic and the most economical verbal form. It has been repeatedly reported that the metaphor is an effective device for self-characteristic of poet, contributing to the disclosure of his activities as a way to achieve spiritual harmony. Metaphor has special semantic-meaningful feature at the disclosure of various concepts, particularly emotive. Explicitly or implicitly expressed emotional concepts are relevant for the poetic model of the world. The concept LAUGH takes a central place among them. Breaking through the prism of the author's world view, this concept is studied in a specific individual author's perspective. Analysis of metaphorical devices that verbalize concept LAUGH has its own topicality, because in poetic texts they obtain specific comprehension, expression and interpretation. This motivates the relevance of the research topic. Purpose

The aim of the study is to analyze the semantics and specific use of metaphorical models that express the concept LAUGH in the contemporary poetic texts.

Tasks

The aim involves solving the following main tasks: 1) to consider theoretical problems, connected with the peculiarities of conceptual metaphor researches; 2) to found and investigate associative and figurative potential of metaphorical nominations that represent concept LAUGH in the contemporary poetic texts.

Conclusion

Modern poetic discourse is the source of formation the associative and creative metaphorical nominations that verbalize the crucial in the emotive picture of the world concept LAUGH. Metaphorical models and their frame-slot structure reveal semantic potential of the concept, enriching its lexical and semantic field by new and modified meanings.

According to the results of the study metaphorical representations of the concept LAUGH in poetic texts of beginning of the XXIth century have frame-slot organization. They have imagery, associativity, individual author's interpretation. Actual material made it possible to single out 12 semantic groups of metaphorical models in which cognitive representations of the concept are the following frames: crying (slots weeping, tears), silence (soundlessly, silence), time (life time, age, eternity), weapons (sword, gun), salvation (smile), space (desert), the boundary (edge), sound (buzz), smell (a girl, a woman, a mother), burn (pain). Enriching the associative palette of the text, they "provide an opportunity to bring together distant, to find common in different, to comprehend abstract through some concrete signs" (M. Holyanych).

Conceptual metaphors that express the concept LAUGH are the components of contemporary poetic discourse by which in the process of mental activity in the individual consciousness parallels and analogies are not only found and comprehended, but gain modality, evaluation and emotiveness of the surrounding reality.
