THE SPACE IN THE NOVEL "THE ROMANTICS" BY K. G. PAUSTOVSKY Tatiana Sivova

Department of Journalism, Grodno State University by Yanka Kupala, Grodno, Belarus

Available 27 September 2012.

Abstract Relevance

The concept of space is the subject of many fundamental and applied sciences. Today linguistic categorization of spatial of concepts and relationships is causes interest of leading linguists (see the works by V.G. Gak, I.M. Kobozeva, M.I. Konyushkevich, M.V. Vsevolodova, E.S. Cubryacova, A.V. Kravchenko, V.A. Maslova, N.B. Mechkovskaya, E.S. Yakovleva, etc.). Modern linguistic studies are turned to the analysis of this category in terms of the different linguistic directions. The research of categories of space in the novel by K.G. Paustovsky "The romantics" is extremely important, because of the fact that the first novel by author has not yet been the subject of undiverted attention of linguists who engaged in the categories of space, at first, and the secondly, the significance of this category for K.G. Paustovsky in virtue of romantic tonality of the novel, the thrust of the author to travel, to wandering.

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is the consideration of the space in the novel by K.G. Paustovsky "The romantics" to determine its artistic structure.

Tasks

The main tasks of the study are: 1) detection to the types of space in the novel; 2) consideration of functional load spatial nominations; 3) identification of the structure of color space of nature. Conclusion

The space of the novel "The romantics" is extensive, multifaceted and structured.

It bears the some imprint of "abstract spatial extensiveness" (a term by M.M. Bakhtin) adventurous Greek of novels [Bakhtin 1975]. The spatial extent implies availability of large spaces. Note, that in the geographical reading "The romantics" found more than 200 geographic names.

At the same time, M.M. Bakhtin emphasizes, the size and diversity of this vast space in the adventure Greek of novels is entirely abstract: "For the shipwreck necessary to the sea, but what does is will be the sea in the geographical and historical sense - is immaterial" [Bakhtin 1975].

Also in the novel by K.G. Paustovsky often the geographical focus is absent: It was in the north, in the town over by Oka, where the frost crunched underfoot like a new skin; We decided to live in this city, until enough money; From my city, I immediately wrote to Hatice...; the name of the head "Unfamiliar city", etc.

The space of the novel "The romantics", in our view, combines features of linear and point space (in terminology by Ju.M. Lotman) [Lotman 1988]. Linearity of the space is due to the continuous movement of the characters in space and the time ("the road as a means for deployment the character in time" [Lotman 1988]). Point of space involves localization heroes in a certain area for a while: - Our all dispersed, - told me Winkler. - Alex went to Kiev, Staszewsky - in Yuzovka, he took a job an intern at the factory. Garibaldi died. I am, as you see here.

The dimensional spatial planes are formed due to the intersection and interpenetration of spaces in a novel. Author emphasizes that these planes are not colorless. The space of the novel is made with a rich color palette, and the color of romanticism is dominant.

Perspective

The identifying the coloring of chronotope of artwork may be a promising. Research highlights

The types of the space in the novel by K.G. Paustovsky have been described. The functional load of the space nomination and the structure of the nature color space of the novel have been revealed. Keywords: space, space nomination, color space.

PHASE CHARACTER OF ASPECTUAL OPPOSITION IN MODERN UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE

Svitlana Sokolova

Doctor of Philology, Senior Research Fellow, Head of Department of Sociolinguistics in Institute of Ukrainian Language of NAS of Ukraine, Kyiv, Ukraine

Available 29 September 2012.

Abstract Relevance

Grammatical category of Slavic verb aspect occupies a special place among other elements aspectuality because it is based on regular purely grammatical contrast that can exist for the preservation of lexical identity. Researchers in many ways determine the semantic nature of the species opposition, but virtually all definitions can be reduced to some standard. Among them are that the completeness / incompleteness action reflects only a special case of species opposition, that this definition is incomplete, simplistic and theoretical determination through the inner boundary and integrity is quite suitable as scientific concepts, but they are difficult to apply in practice, finding semantic invariant species opposition continues are and nowadays, despite the fact that its existence is one of the classic disputes grammatical theory.

Purpose

That is why there was a need to investigate specific types of species contrasts verbs IAV-CA to determine their specific semantic content.

Tasks

The stated purpose necessitates solving the following tasks: 1) to analyze the semantic relations in the suffix aspect pairs based on cause-effect relationships between their components, and 2) to create a typology of the semantic

types, and 3) to prove the phase character of boundaries in aspect opposition, and 4) to compare the conclusions from the findings obtained based on the Russian language.

Conclusion

In suffix aspect pairs (like with prefixes ones) of Ukrainian verbs there are three types of semantic relations: 'action / process - the result of this action / process', 'beginning of state - actually state' and 'state - single-use manifestation of the condition'. Between the last two manifestations are not always possible to draw a clear line. The beginning and the end are phases of action (process) because the aspects have a contrastive phase character, and the phase boundary is a sign of any aspect opposition regardless of its "burden" additional lexical meaning.

Perspective

Recognition of phase character of the aspect contrasting enables the paradigmatic approach in which comprehensively examine all the basic aspectual verb paradigm, which includes, by analogy to the word creative paradigm, a fragment of derivational slot of verb formed directly with derived verbs in IAV and CA (confixe way of motivation) that in various aspects characterize the action in terms of its correlation with the start, end, continue, frequency, uncontinuity, etc., that have different aspectual properties, which opens opportunities for lexicographic processing verbal vocabulary, comparative study of languages and teaching Slavic aspect in non-Slavic audience.

Research highlights

The article analyzes different attitudes towards the definition of aspectual opposition nature and the search of the invariant of perfect and imperfect aspect form in Russian and Ukrainian traditions. It was concluded that these attitudes do not contradict each other characterizing phenomena from various views. ► The phase character of limit was proved by which the action is limited, indicated by verbs of perfect aspect form, those that indicate the beginning, the end (completion) or the beginning and the end of the action simultaneously and forming with verbs of perfect and imperfect form oppositions: inceptive-processing, process-limitative or multiple-single.

Keywords: category of verbal aspect, invariant, aspectual opposition, internal limit, the phasality, limitativity, inceptivity.

GENERAL SEMANTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF ENGLISH EVALUATIVE ANTHROPONYMS

Yevheniia Sysoieva

Department of English Philology, Donetsk National University, Donetsk, Donetsk Region, Ukraine

Available 29 September 2012.

Abstract

Relevance

The topicality of the study lies in linguistic and cultural approach to the analysis of semantic and derivational functionality and stylistic potential of evaluative anthroponyms that form a significant layer of English anthroponym system. This angle of study reveals the role of evaluative anthroponyms in the reconstruction of fragments of English value worldview associated with stereotypes and priorities of the speakers in the naming.

Purpose

The aim of the research is to establish and describe the semantic, structural and functional-stylistic features of English evaluative anthroponyms.

Tasks

Achieving the above formulated goal requires the solution of the following problems:1) to substantiate the theoretical basics of the evaluative anthroponyms' semantics, to determine the specific nature of their meaning; 2) identify the main motives of naming process;3) to distinguish evaluative anthroponyms from the English general bulk of given names; 4) to carry out the semantic classification of English evaluative anthroponyms, to analyze axiological changes in their semantics; 5) to describe structural types and models of evaluative anthroponyms; 6) to reveal the features of the evaluative meaning component of English anthroponyms in the context of fiction.

Conclusion

The research reveals that English anthroponymic system is replenished at the expense of positive-evaluative units that are accounted for by the influence of the pragmatic factor on the language. While naming parents strive for choosing a name which would endow their child with the features explicated by the positive-evaluative meaning of the anthroponym.

The semantic analysis of the language material enables to distribute the units studied to the following semantic classes: "allusive evaluative anthroponyms", "evaluative anthroponyms with the differential seme 'appearance'", "evaluative anthroponyms indicating occupation or social position", "religious evaluative anthroponyms", "evaluative anthroponyms explicating character features", "evaluative anthroponyms with the differential seme 'international hostility'", "evaluative anthroponyms with the differential seme 'interpersonal relations'" and "other evaluative anthroponyms". The seme analysis shows that names as linguosocial units can express the attitude of a speaker to some aspects of real life (appearance, occupation, religion, international ties, interpersonal communication).

Perspective

It seems promising to carry out the comparative analysis and to describe semantic, structural and functioning peculiarities of evaluative anthroponyms belonging to other languages of different structure and to compare naming traditions of different linguocultures.

Research highlights

► The article focuses on the description of the general methodology of analysis of semantic peculiarities of evaluative anthroponyms. ► The semantic classification of evaluative anthroponyms has been carried out. ► The correlation of positive- and negative-evaluative anthroponyms within the semantic classes, groups and subgroups has been analyzed. The value stereotypes and priorities of English participants of naming process have been

characterized. ► The corpus of language material has been studied from the viewpoint of the semantics and evaluation activator, the evaluation sign ('+' or '-'), popularity.

Keywords: evaluative anthroponym, positive-evaluative anthroponym, negative -evaluative anthroponym, evaluation activator, anthroponymic system, naming motive.
